Niger Governor Suspends Eid-el-Kabir Celebrations to Mourn Mokwa Flood Victims.

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has cancelled all Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across the state in honour of the victims of the recent flood disaster that struck Mokwa Local Government Area.

The tragic incident, which occurred on the night of May 29, left over 200 people dead, affected 503 households, and displaced more than 3,000 residents. The flood also submerged and destroyed three major bridges in the area, severely hampering rescue and relief efforts.

In a statement signed by Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, Governor Bago directed a statewide suspension of all public Sallah festivities, including the traditional hawan bariki and durbar.

“Abubakar Usman emphasised that this decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic incident and to allow for a period of mourning, prayer and reflection,” the statement reads.

The governor ordered that only “low-key” Eid-el-Kabir celebrations be observed in all emirates of the state, advising against large gatherings or ceremonial events.

Described as one of the worst floods in decades, the disaster has left the Mokwa community in deep grief, with families losing loved ones, homes, and sources of livelihood.
