NIDCOM Demands Justice Over Mysterious Death of Nigerian in Luxembourg Police Custody
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has called for a thorough investigation following troubling reports that Daniel Eheri, a Nigerian national, died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody in Luxembourg.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, confirmed the commission is collaborating with the Nigerian Embassy in Belgium to uncover the truth surrounding Eheri’s untimely death.
Eheri’s case came to public attention through a formal petition submitted to NIDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa by the Nigerian community in Luxembourg. The petition, signed by Sunday Adekolu, the group’s national coordinator, expressed outrage and concern over the alleged lack of transparency in the handling of Eheri’s arrest and subsequent death.
According to the petition, Eheri was arrested by Luxembourg police on February 10 while reportedly in possession of food items. Shockingly, he was pronounced dead just a day later, with no official explanation provided.
“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a legal residence permit holder,” Adekolu stated. “To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case.”
The petition also revealed that Nigeria’s Ambassador to Belgium, Obinna Onowu—whose jurisdiction includes Luxembourg—has made repeated attempts to get answers from Luxembourg authorities. However, two formal letters sent by the ambassador have reportedly gone unanswered.
In response, the Nigerian community has appealed to NIDCOM to intervene urgently, demanding an official autopsy report and a detailed account of the events leading to Eheri’s death.
Reacting to the petition, Dabiri-Erewa expressed deep condolences to the Eheri family and strongly condemned the incident. She assured the Nigerian public that NIDCOM is committed to pursuing justice and would leave no stone unturned in its quest to uncover the truth.
“This is unacceptable,” she said. “We will continue to engage relevant authorities until we get the answers and justice Daniel Eheri and his family deserve.”
