New York: 29 injured in Chelsea neighbourhood explosion
At least 29 people were injured after a powerful blast wrecked the peace in Chelsea neighbourhood of New York, officials say.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said the explosion was “intentional” but there is no “evidence at this point of a terror connection”.
After the late Saturday blast, police found another device which appeared to be a pressure cooker with bomb-like wiring.
“Tonight, New York City experienced a very bad incident,” de Blasio said at a news conference near the scene in Chelsea. “We have no credible and specific threat at this moment.”
The blast happened at around 8:30 p.m. on West 23rd Street in Chelsea. It appeared to originate from a construction toolbox in front of a building, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
A pressure cooker at West 27th Street that was attached to wiring and a cellphone was found about three hours later.
