Neusroom 100: 5 reasons why it is important to celebrate those helping the world conquer COVID-19
As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, with reports of spike in deaths, suffering, social disruptions, and economic losses, there has been very little in the media for the world to celebrate. All attention has been fixated on the crisis sweeping across the globe.
Amid all the crisis, Neusroom has created the 100 list highlighting the sacrifices and contributions of people, organisations, countries and even things – products of humanity’s creativity, that are helping the world win the ongoing fight against COVID-19.
It is an unexpected crisis, yet some of the Neusroom 100 honourees have offered help even when they didn’t prepare for the pandemic that has been described as one of the greatest challenges the world has had to face in the 21st Century.
They have presented a different perspective of heroism, and we don’t have to wait until their death before acknowledging the impact of the roles they are playing in the global fight against COVID-19.
Here’s five reasons why we believe it is important to celebrate those helping the world win the fight against COVID-19:
They are solving the world’s problem
It is a different thing to have scientific, economic, and political power, it is another to know how to use it when and where it matters. Since the global outbreak of the pandemic, those listed on the Neusroom 100 project have been making sacrifices to help the world solve problems like helping the vulnerable most affected by the pandemic, funding research, staying at the frontline to manage and prevent the crisis.
Saving the world in time of trouble:
The COVID-19 heroes on Neusroom 100 project have shown that heroes don’t have to come in the form of comic book superheroes like Superman, spiderman among others, before they can save the world in times of trouble. What many on the list have done is that they are showing responsibility and taking actions that have saved millions of lives endangered by the pandemic. They have continued to tell us what to do and not do to stay safe, where to get treatment if infected. Some of their actions may look little, but they have helped save lives.
They have given us hope
In the midst of a series of misleading information on the internet creating fear and panic about the pandemic, some of those highlighted on the Neusroom 100 have been providing accurate and useful guidance that has helped save lives and giving hope in a period of uncertainty. They have been beacons of light amidst the dark cloud with their research
Protecting us from the enemy threatening our existence:
The COVID-19 pandemic has also shown that we can bank on some of the little things that are products of humanity’s creativity to protect us from the virus threatening our existence. The 10 things listed on the Neusroom 100 project may be inanimate objects but their roles in the fight against the pandemic has stood them out and it is important to recognise them.
Inspire us when we are down
While the world is confronted with phases of challenges, the Neusroom 100 highlights those whose actions have lifted us emotionally, physically and economically. As businesses are failing, millions are losing jobs, many of those highlighted on the project have offered support to inspire business owners and employees whose lives and livelihood have been endangered by the pandemic.
