Amid Gaza Conflict, Netanyahu Nominates Trump For Nobel Peace Prize
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts in brokering peace across regions and securing Israeli interests.
Netanyahu announced this in a White House dinner in Washington on Monday, where he presented Trump with a copy of the nomination letter sent to the Nobel Prize Committee.
“I want to express the appreciation and admiration not only of all Israelis but of the Jewish people,” Netanyahu said. “He’s forging peace as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other.”
“So, I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. It’s my pleasure to nominate you for the Peace Prize, which is well-deserved. You should get it.”
Trump, acknowledging the gesture, responded: “Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful.”
This marks the second time Trump has been nominated for the prestigious award. Last month, Pakistan nominated him for his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The Pakistani government credited Trump with “robust diplomatic engagement” and praised his “great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship.”
The Netanyahu-Trump meeting comes at a tense moment, as Israel continues military operations in Gaza, despite talks for a ceasefire. Trump recently announced that Israel had agreed to a 60-day truce with Hamas, a claim followed by Hamas saying it had submitted a “positive response” to the ceasefire-hostage deal.
Addressing the Gaza situation, Netanyahu said: “The strip should be an open place… Palestinians should have it [freedom to choose].”
Trump added: “We’ve had great cooperation from many surrounding Israel… something good will happen.”
