NERC Inaugurates Grid Code Review Panel to Boost Power Sector Efficiency

The efficiency of Nigeria’s power sector, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has inaugurated a new Grid Code Review Panel (GCRP). The panel’s primary responsibility is to evaluate and administer amendments to the grid code, the technical rulebook that governs the operation, maintenance, and development of the country’s electricity transmission system.

NERC, in a statement on Tuesday, emphasized that the GCRP will meticulously assess proposed amendments to the existing grid code. Once reviewed, these amendments will be presented to an initial stakeholders’ advisory panel before being submitted for final approval by the commission.

The newly formed panel consists of 19 members—15 core members and four secretariat officials—drawn from key industry players, including generation companies, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), distribution companies, and eligible customers.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chidi Ike, NERC’s Commissioner for Engineering Performance and Monitoring, highlighted the significance of the panel’s formation. He noted that the last GCRP was constituted in 2018, and since then, substantial changes have taken place within the national electricity grid.

“And a lot has happened since then in the operation of the national electricity grid,” Ike stated, underscoring the urgency of the panel’s mandate.

NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba urged the newly appointed members to approach their responsibilities with dedication, stressing the critical role of the grid code in maintaining a stable and efficient electricity sector.
