NCAA to punish Airlines that sell tickets without informing passengers of their destinations’s restrictions
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced a decisive stance against airlines selling tickets to passengers, only to later deport them due to visa or travel restrictions. This policy change aims to protect the rights of travellers and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NCAA Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, expressed deep concern over the distress caused to passengers who find themselves stranded at intermediate transit points. “We have received numerous complaints regarding airlines that sell tickets without ensuring that passengers are aware of potential barriers to their travel,” he stated.
The NCAA emphasized that these practices are unacceptable and that airlines have a responsibility to inform travellers about any admissibility issues before their journey begins. “Passengers should not be put in a position where they are denied entry or forcibly returned to Nigeria at transit stops,” the authority asserted.
Following Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, the NCAA outlined that all airlines and their agents are required to notify passengers of any travel restrictions or visa requirements before departure. “Airlines must implement measures to screen travellers and provide them with accurate, up-to-date information regarding their travel documents,” Achimugu added.
Effective immediately, the NCAA has warned that any airline found engaging in such practices will face strict regulatory actions. These could include fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed necessary.
