National Assembly: Senator wants corruption legalised

A senator wants corruption to be legalized, so that looters of public funds can reinvest stolen funds in Nigeria rather than stash them abroad.
Senator Omoyele Omogunwa made the unguided suggestion during the senate plenary on Wednesday.
Omogunwa was reacting to the debate on the 2017 budget recently submitted by President Buhari, citing a lack of maximal impact of budgets due to corruption as his reason.
The Ondo state senator lamented that there was corruption in the judiciary, and even within the anti-corruption agencies.
According to reports, he opined that if corruption was legalised, looters would use stolen funds to build factories and industries in the country, instead of having them stashed away abroad.
Omogunwa called for careful examination of the budget.
The Senate confirmed Omogunwa’s suggestion, tweeting through its official handle: “Senator Omogunwa notes that Budgets doesn’t have maximal impact due to corruption. He says corruption should be legalized/liberalized then.”
