How Karl Toriola is rewriting the script of Pan-African digital integration with Congo visit

MTN Karl Toriola in Congo

In a significant move that underscores the deepening of corporate ties between MTN and the Republic of Congo, Dr Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria and Vice President for MTN Francophone Africa, was received in audience by His Excellency, President Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The meeting, characterised by high-level diplomatic protocols, signalled a new era of digital cooperation aimed at fulfilling the Republic’s 2022-2026 National Development Plan.

Toriola’s mission to Brazzaville focused on infrastructure and visionary leadership. Also present were the Honourable Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso and the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy, Leon Juste Ibombo. The discussions centred on a renewed desire to catalyse MTN’s impact within the Congolese market, which remains a cornerstone of the Group’s French-speaking portfolio.

A pivotal theme of the visit was the tangible contribution of MTN to Congo’s socio-economic fabric. Toriola emphasised that the company’s roadmap is intricately linked to the state’s development goals, specifically focusing on the modernisation of telecommunications infrastructure. By enhancing connectivity, MTN aims to provide the backbone upon which the Congolese government can build its future-proof digital economy.

Perhaps the most significant announcement from the visit was the proposal to democratise the company’s success. Toriola discussed the prospects of opening MTN Congo’s capital to national investors, a move that financial analysts describe as a masterstroke in fostering local ownership. This strategy aligns with the broader MTN Group’s Ambition 2025 to create shared value across its operational footprint.

He said: “As we continue with our digital development and connection drive, we have been rolling out aggressively all over Congo, even to the villages. For instance, we have launched more than 100 rural villages with 4G coverage. So it is now possible to make video calls, download documents and perform multiple online actions in the villages.

We’re very proud of this, but we can only do all that because we have a stable environment here in Congo and for that I must commend the government and the President.”

As Toriola concluded his visit, he expressed profound gratitude to the Congolese authorities for their partnership. For a man who now oversees a massive chunk of Africa’s digital landscape, the Brazzaville mission reinforces his reputation as a bridge-builder, ensuring that Nigerian leadership in the tech space continues to drive progress across the continent’s most strategic markets.
