How Mr. Controversy, Ayo Fayose became Nigeria’s most popular Governor

Ayo Fayose is a very vocal man and while many hate him for this, as many Nigerians admire the Ekiti State governor for his constant criticisms of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

Nicknamed ‘People’s Governor’, Fayose first became Ekiti State governor between May 29, 2003 and October 16, 2006.

He would return to the seat of power in October 16, 2014 after beating Kayode Fayemi at the polls and has since been put side by side with popular Governors like Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, even Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state.

We take a look at what has made him the popular governor in Nigeria he is today.

BOLD SPOKESPERSON

The Ekiti State governor has gained the admiration of many Nigerians who see him as a bold spokesperson for the opposition.

Some believe Fayose is fond of heating up the already charged polity. From accusing Aisha Buhari to being involved in the Haliburton corruption scandal to claiming Buhari would never return from medical vacation, Fayose has ruffled feathers often.

PRESIDENTIAL AMBITION
Fayose’s presidential ambition has given him more relevance and made him even more popular amongst the other Governors.

His ambition for Aso Rock has seen him get his campaign going on social media, with the motto – ‘Strong, Reliable and Rugged’ as Fayose called on Nigerians to behold their next president.

The governor has been spotted driving selling meat, pepper, maize and generally mingling with the people on the streets of Ekiti.

Fayose was also recently spotted buying bananas from a young boy whom many presumed should be in school at the time of the purchase.

Nonetheless, if there is an award for governors with penchant for showing up at roadside Bukas, then Fayose, would get the prize.

BELIEVES IT WAS THE POOR THAT GOT HIM INTO POWER

Following his victory in the last gubernatorial elections in Ekiti, Ayo Fayose has attributed his victory to the fact that he is a grass-root politician who puts the needs of the masses first.

This attitude would put him in good stead ahead of the 2019 polls.
