Missed opportunities as Nigerian students spend N1trn on foreign universities yearly

It has been disclosed that Nigeria is missing out on the opportunity of generating more than N1trn revenue from fees that students from the country pay to study abroad annually.

This observation was made by Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, the Pro Chancellor of Crawford University while speaking at the 10th Convocation of the university in Igbesa. The Prof who was once the Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos implored the government to support private universities so that they can fill the void that their public counterparts leave behind.

“The advent of private universities in our nation some 20 years ago opens to us great possibility of providing greater and even more qualitative access to higher education,” he said.

Most parents have come to a consensus that the quality of education in Nigeria is so poor that it cannot equip their children with adequate skills they need to succeed in the future. They’ve consequently given preference to sending their kids to foreign universities because of their prestige and high standard of education.

Prof. Ibidapo-Obe argued that all of this can change if the government can create an Education Bank that can provide credit line to qualified institutions so that they can improve the quality of higher education in the country.
