Many feared dead as US bombs Syrian airbase in retaliation for “very barbaric attack” on citizens
The United States military, on Friday, launched a strike on a Syrian airbase, killing several people.
The missile strike on the Syrian regime airbase was believed to be in response to “war crimes” committed by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
US President Donald Trump ordered the military strike on the base in retaliation for what he said was a “very barbaric attack” when dozens were killed early on Tuesday in Khan Sheikhun in Idlib, northwestern Syria.
Trump had earlier that stated “something should happen” in retaliation for the chemical weapons strike by the Assad regime.
The governor of Homs province, Talal Barazi told AFP “There are martyrs, but we don’t yet know the number either of martyrs or of wounded.”
Barazi said parts of the base were on fire and some of the wounded were suffering from burns.
“It will take some time to determine the extent of the damages,” he said.
“Of course we condemn this, all action targeting Syrian military bases is condemnable,” Barazi said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the destruction of Sharyat airbase marked “an important step to ensure that chemical and conventional attacks against the civilian population do not go unpunished.”
