Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, has been shut down indefinitely.

The decision was due to the violence that followed the death of a student knocked down on Tuesday by a hit-and-run driver, Joseph Labani, the polytechnic’s registrar told newsmen.

He said the student died from injuries he sustained in the accident which happened by the school gate.

He added that students didn’t listen to the management’s plea to remain calm.

“However, to our surprise the students failed to heed to our plea and embarked on the protest and you can see the devastating outcome,’’ Mr. Labani said.

The institution’s management was then forced to invite security operatives to avert total breakdownof law and order.

Meanwhile, Jafaru Habibu, spokesman of the Students Union Government, said the incident was not the first, as many students had died in such manner.

“This particular one was so pathetic and sparked a lot of reactions from students and we decided to embark on a peaceful protest.

“We are always paying all the fees the institution asks us to pay so they should also meet our demands.
“Government has continued to pay deaf ears to our plea of constructing speed breakers along the school road,’’ Habibu said.

He appealed to the authorities to put safety measures, including speed breakers on the highway, to check the excesses of careless drivers..
