Man sentenced to death by hanging for beating mother to death in Plateau
An uncontrolled anger by a 24-year-old man in Plateau which led to the death of his mother is being brought to justice as the High Court sitting in Jos sentenced him to death by hanging.
Godwin Banchir who reportedly struck his mother by the ribs with the handle of an axe for ignoring his greetings when he returned from the farm, said it wasn’t his intention to kill her. He disclosed that he has been having misunderstanding with his mother for some time.
“Each time I returned from the farm, she would not cook for me on time, and she always quarreled with me whenever I wanted to bathe with the water she fetched from the stream,” he said.
Presiding over the case, Justice Daniel Longji handed down the severest sentence to Banchir:
“Going by the findings of this court, you, Godwin Banchir, mercilessly took the life of your mother, Mrs Saratu Banchir, in cold blood,” the Judge established.
“This sentence is mandatory, as the law states that any person convicted of murder shall be punished with death by hanging.
“The sentence of this court upon you is that you, Godwin Banchir, will be hanged until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”
