Man, 20, drowns during baptism in Ghana

A quest to become baptised has led to the tragic death of a Ghanaian man identified as Yaw Kyeremeh.

The 20-year-old was captured in a distressing video drowning in the River Densu, near Ghana’s capital of Accra on Sunday.

Yaw was undergoing the baptism when he refused to reappear from the water after a young pastor lowered him in.

He threw out an arm to grab hold of the pastor, but only succeeded in pulling them both under.

Panicked worshippers and the pastor’s desperate efforts to rescue Yaw was futile, as he drowned.

Police later arrived the scene and arrested the pastor.

Ghana Web quotes Yaw’s brother, Evans Alexenest as saying he was at the church when he was informed of the incident.

Evans said he had gone to identify Yaw’s body at the morgue and declined to hold the church accountable, accepting that it was God’s doing.
