Let’s face it, Buhari is NOT coming back

Handlers may succeed in “packaging” a “healthy” Muhammadu Buhari for a Democracy Day speech come May 29. But’s let’s face it, the idea that Mr President will return to the campaign trail in 2019 is bonkers. Buhari is not coming back.

Buhari is old and sick.

And Buhari is increasingly proving to Nigerians that he belongs to a power-hungry cabal that will do anything to keep their man at the helms whether or not it’s beneficial to Nigeria.

There’s a debate, confusion actually, over who’ll sign the budget. Findings of the probe into alleged corruption by shameless SGF Bababchir Lawal was due May 8. Check the date. We’re yet to hear from the Presidency?

Meanwhile, Buhari is strapped to a sick bed in London where doctors are treated better than the ones in his home country. A sickly 74-year-old who obviously can no longer perform the duties of his office would not take the noble step of stepping aside. Why won’t someone ask: Who is the Presidency?

The next two years of Nigerian national life and governance may well be wasted, like Buhari seemed to have squandered the first two years of his first term, because of Buhari’s dangerous stubbornness as Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, including Buhari’s media aides and information minister Lai Mohammed, remains the most confused person in Aso Rock. There’s a power vacuum in Abuja, and those not with Buhari in the UK are as clueless as Jonathan.

Osinbajo’s powers as Acting President are unlimited, we were told. But we know, from Buhari’s body language and the body odour of the members of his kitchen cabinet, that this is true only on the pages of the Nigerian Constitution.

And we thought Buhari would be the “new” Mandela who could have made himself President for Life, but chose to step aside after a term. We thought Buhari would be noble enough to step out of the way if his health constituted a hindrance to Nigeria’s progress.

We were wrong.

Another election cycle is coming and those wishing and praying Buhari recovers to seek a second term (perhaps to consolidate the powers of his inner circle) are in La La Land.

The best thing Buhari can do right now is, if he won’t resign, to complete this first (and last) term, and return to Daura…not to the campaign trail.

Buhari’s political career is over. He’s not coming back.
