Owonifari Market in Oshodi, Lagos, was demolished on January 6, 2016.

Owonifari Market in Oshodi area of Lagos State has been demolished.

NewsroomNG has obtained an audio of a meeting the traders had before last Christmas.

The meeting held around 6:00 p.m. December 21, 2015.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, we gathered, had held a meeting with the chairman of the market whom we can only identify as Mr. Sam.

At the meeting, the governor had made it clear the demolition of Owonifari Market was a done deal. But the chairman had raised objections that the alternative Oshodi Ressettlement Market was a death trap.

Mr. Sam later said in the audio (the meeting with fellow traders) that the “death trap” was now “a promised land.”

At a point in the audio, Mr. Sam was heard crying as he lamented about the troubles himself and his executives went through.

After his speech, the deputy chairman of the market also addressed the traders. He said it was not wise to fight the Lagos State government.

As the meeting ended, a man grabbed the microphone and said “The solidity of that plaza (Oshodi Resettlement Market is what matters. Mark my words.”.
