Leah Sharibu’s mother drags FG, IGP Idris to court for N500m

The mother of Leah Sharibu, the teenage student of Government Girls Secondary School who was abducted by members of the Boko Haram sect and being held over her refusal to denounce her faith, has sued the Federal Government.

Leah’s mother, Rebecca Sharibu, is demanding N500 million from the government as damages.

Rebecca, whose daughter has been in captivity since February, accuses the FG, IGP Ibrahim Idris, and the Attorney-General of the federation, Abubakar Malami, of “dereliction of duties”.

The suit, dated September 19, was jointly filed with Daniel David Kadzai and Lift-Up-Now Incorporation, a US-based organisation.

The suit stated that Rebecca wants the court to direct and mandate the defendants immediately secure the unconditional release of Leah from her abductors.

Rebecca, in the suit, stated that she is also seeking “an order compelling the defendants to employ every means in securing the plaintiff from the custody of her captors; an order compelling the defendants to pay the plaintiff the sum of N500 million being compensation for the indignities and human deprivations suffered by the plaintiff as a result of the defendants’ dereliction of statutory duties in securing her release from her captors since the month of February, 2018 till date of this action”.

A recording of Leah made media rounds last month, where she pleaded with the government to come to her rescue.

There have also been fears that the terrorist sect holding her could resort to kill her as they recently did with a midwife working with the Red Cross.
