LASUTH doctors threaten strike, lament lack of enough hands

Resident doctors at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) are set to go on strike on Wednesday, September 5.

The doctors say that the state government has refused to meet their demands of employing house officers for the hospital, which makes their work more difficult.

The resident doctors’ association acting President, Dr Ibrahim Ogunbi said the state government had been given an ultimatum which it has refused to honour.

“After a 21-day ultimatum, which expired on August 23, the congress resolved that the grace of one week be given for the immediate employment of resident doctors which will put an end to the recurrent shortage of doctors in LASUTH,” he said.

“Failure to implement this will lead to a total warning strike for three days starting from 8 am on the 5th of September, 2018 followed by an indefinite partial strike during which only emergencies will be attended to until expected response is obtained.”

According to Ogunbi, the shortage of resident doctors had been recurring for the past three years, as doctors who have left have been adequately replaced.

Newsroom gathers that there are presently not enough resident doctors to cater to the influx of patients at the hospital.

A doctor at LASUTH who preferred anonymity told us that the lack of enough resident doctors “is taking a toll on [his] time with [his] family.

“Many of my colleagues have run away from the country, I’m just hanging in there,” he told us.
