Lagos suicide: “Body recovered not Doctor Orji’s” – family says

The search for the body of a Nigerian doctor who apparently committed suicide in Lagos is yet to bear fruit.

Marine Police, Tuesday, recovered a body from the waters under Third Mainland Bridge. But the family of a Doctor Allwell Orji, who jumped off the bridge into the Lagos Lagoon, said the body recovered was not his.

Mrs Catherine Orji, mother of the victim, at the scene of the incident on Sunday.

Spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Kehinde Adebayo, made the revelation following news of the recovery.

“About five members of his family were there with the driver; also, the Commissioner of Police, General Manager of Inland Waterways and other relevant agencies were there,” Adebayo said.

“The family members looked at the body and confirmed it was not the body of Dr Orji; the clothes on the recovered corpse did not tally with what Orji was said to have been putting on,” he said.

Lagos police chief Fatai Owoseni.

After police found the body, commissioner Fatai Owoseni reportedly told a popular TV station the body was Orji’s.

“The family have been told to report there to identify the body,” Adebayo said.
