Lagos: Residents surrender valuables as armed robbers invade Bariga
Sunday night came with fury at Arobadade street, Ilaje-Bariga, Lagos.
It was 9pm. Residents were preparing for bed when armed robbers invaded the area.
“They came with guns, machetes, and all manner of dangerous weapons,” a terrified victim who doesn’t want to be identified told NewsroomNG on Wednesday night.
The robbers didn’t enter any of the houses in the area but robbed almost everyone they found on the street. Most of the victims were sitting in front of their residences.
Phones, laptops, cash, and other items were snatched at gunpoint.
“They operated too fast for anyone to call the police,” another victim said. “We’re still living in fear because they could return anytime. It’s not the first time this would happen around here and the police have not been able to really stop this people”.
We gathered some Bariga neighbourhoods have lost confidence in the police whom they claim only “barricade roads to extort money from motorists”.
“We don’t trust the police here that’s why we’re erecting gates and paying vigilantes to stop these armed robbers,” a man from another street told our correspondent.
The police were not available for comment.
