Lagos Doctors Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned that it will join the Medical Guild in an indefinite strike if the state government fails to address the issue of withheld salaries by August 25, 2025.

The NMA expressed its full support for the Medical Guild’s 21-day ultimatum to the state government, which demands the immediate refund of unauthorized deductions from doctors’ July salaries and complete payment of their August wages.

The doctors are also seeking improved welfare, including the provision of free call meals to doctors on duty. The NMA criticized the state government’s persistent tampering with doctors’ earnings without explanation or justification, calling it “unacceptable and an affront to the medical profession.”

The association urged the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, to swiftly resolve the crisis, emphasizing the need for political will to protect the integrity of the health workforce in Lagos. If the government fails to act, the Medical Guild will commence an indefinite strike, and NMA Lagos will join the strike two weeks later.
