Labour Union Suspends Strike For One Week
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their industrial action for a week, following a joint meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
The decision to suspend the strike, which began on Monday, was confirmed by TUC President Festus Osifo in an interview with Channels Television. According to Osifo, the suspension is effective immediately, and a communiqué detailing the terms of the suspension will be issued shortly.
“A joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC has approved relaxing the industrial action for one week, effective immediately,” Osifo said.
The strike, which had grounded activities in critical sectors of the economy, including schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports, was called to protest the hike in electricity tariffs and the lack of consensus on a new minimum wage. The national grid was also shut down, leaving the nation in darkness.
Earlier on Monday evening, the tripartite committee, comprising government officials, labour leaders, and employers, resolved to meet daily for the next week to finalize the new minimum wage, as the government agreed to a minimum wage above ₦60,000. The committee’s negotiations will be crucial in determining the next steps in the dispute.
