Abure-Led Labour Party Gives Obi 48 Hours to Resign Over ADC Coalition Move

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to formally resign his membership following his participation in a new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obiora Ifoh, spokesperson for the LP, made the demand in a statement on Thursday, emphasising the party’s total rejection of the coalition and accusing Obi of betraying the party’s ideals.

“Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi has received a 48 hour ultimatum to formally resign his membership of the Labour Party having formally joined the coalition party,” the statement reads.

Obi, who attended the coalition’s unveiling in Abuja, had earlier stated that joining the ADC-led alliance was not a casual decision. However, the LP leadership insists that the coalition represents a deviation from its core values and mission.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” Ifoh claimed.

He described the coalition as “a gathering of recycled, desperate and frustrated politicians,” distancing the party from any alliance with it.

“Labour Party is not available for people with a dual agenda, people with a deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one party and another leg elsewhere,” Ifoh added.

He emphasised the LP’s commitment to youth-driven change, noting: “Nearly 70 per cent of the Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate.”

The party called on loyal members to remain steadfast, warning that the “new Nigeria” cannot emerge through opportunistic politics.
