“Kitchen is not your portion” – Patience Jonathan tells Aisha Buhari

By now, you must have heard President Muhammadu Buhari “jokingly” dumped his wife Aisha where she “belongs”: the kitchen, Buhari’s parlour and “the other room”.

Former First Lady Patience Jonathan disagrees with the man who succeeded her husband.

And Mrs Jonathan registered her opinion regarding the place of women in the society as far back as 2014.

“Nigerian women should no longer go back to the kitchen,” she said while campaigning for her husband Goodluck.

“It is not our portion to go back to the kitchen. We have women that are capable. We can contribute our quota to the development of Nigeria.”

Buhari’s comments seemed rife with misogyny — dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.

While presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu said his boss was merely joking, many say Buhari’s “kitchen and bedroom” “banter” may be reflective of an outdated world view in which women were nothing more than second class humans.
