Kerosene explosion kills newly matriculated student in Calabar

A newly matriculated 21-year-old girl, Ogolo Eke, has been reportedly burnt beyond recognition by fire which was suspected to have been caused by adulterated kerosene.

Ogolo was a 100 level Microbiology student at the Cross River University of Technology, Calabar. Her brother said she only just gained admission about two weeks ago after being unlucky for four years.

“Ogolo was trying to refill a lantern with kerosene around 7.45pm on Wednesday when an explosion occurred,” a family member identified as Felix said.

He said the victim was rushed to a private hospital in Calabar in critical condition, but she could not survive the severe burns.

It was gathered that that the Ogolo’s explosion is the sixth incident this year which was blamed on activities of black marketers selling adulterated kerosene.

One witness, Ignatius Agbama said a said a teacher was also injured in the incident.

Agbama said, “The female teacher is my neighbour.  She was injured in the explosion. That explosion occurred a few hours after Ogolo’s room was gutted by fire. This is the sixth incident this year alone and we have stopped patronising black marketers for kerosene. We now buy directly from the filling stations.”
