Keep an eye on Boko Haram, UN Envoy tells international community

The unending reign of terror by the notorious terrorist organization, Boko Haram has garnered a renewed interest by the United Nations.

After many years of operating in the Northeast of Nigeria and still belligerent after near defeat, the UN has called on the international community to pay more attention to the activities of the group.

The head of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), Francois Fall made the call at the UN headquarters while briefing the security council on the developments in the Central African sub-region.

He revealed that Boko Haram has become a malicious threat in the region and needs to be watched carefully “as it continues to launch indiscriminate attacks against security forces as well as civilians.”

“Efforts to stamp out Boko Haram should also focus on addressing the root causes of the insurgency,” he said.

While the international community have always condemned the activities of Boko Haram, there has not been any substantial security assistance coming from the world powers like the US, UK and China.

In fact, the U.S has been adamant about selling weapons to the Nigeria military until recently when it showed a little bit of interest in doing so.

The UN envoy fear that if the international community doesn’t join forces with Nigeria to stamp out Boko Haram, the group will inevitably spread to neighbouring countries, where it would create enormous challenges that would overwhelm global security.
