Kebbi: Residents fear “poisoned” water as flooding hits mosque, 6 communities

*Kebbi flash floods: More than six communities were affected.*

At least six communities in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, have been flooded.

The flooding followed several hours of stormy rainfalls on Tuesday.

Areas affected include Bayan Kara, Go Slow, Rafin Atiku, Badariya Phase II, Aliero Quarters and Zauro amongst others.

A Kebbi mosque and environs were affected.

Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu visited the different areas from the early hours of the morning to assess damages, commiserate and plan with victims and other government officials on what to do moving forward.

He expressed concerns about the safety of the people and called for calm and the avoidance of contaminated water in order to prevent health issues; ordering the distribution of clean drinking water to those affected.

Bagudu mentioned causes and challenges that may have worsened the situation. He said that where there are drainage systems, some have blockages due to garbage/refuse dumping; also construction works happening around the city could also be a contributing factor.

He added that the growth and development of the city has houses and buildings that didn’t exist on certain lands before.

The Governor stated that sometimes it’s takes problems like these occurring for the State to know what needs to be fixed.

He said that environmental tests that would have determined the effect of water flow were not conducted very well in the past and he assured that the relevant authorities, security agencies and construction companies are all on board to expedite the flow out of blocked areas and to ensure that situations like these are prevented in the future.
