Kano spiritualist bags 10-year jail term after being caught in possession of fake US dollars

A spiritualist identified as Abubakar Ishaq aka Mai-Rakuma has will spend the next five years in prison after being found in possession of counterfeit currency.

Abubakar faced a two-count charge at the Federal High Court in Kano on Thursday, where Justice Lewis Allagoa handed down a 10-year jail sentence.

The convict had earlier been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after 176 pieces of fake US dollars were found at his residence during a raid.

The court put him on administrative bail during trial.

Abubakar later pleaded guilty to two of the charges against him. Prior to his plea, prosecution counsel, Samuel Chime applied to withdraw count 3 and 4 of the charge.

Justice Allagoa had adjourned the case to November 8 for judgement.

Abubakar’s counsel, Mohammed Aliyu had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy during trial. Aliyu pleaded for an option of fine rather than the jail sentence.

Justice Allagoa declined the plea and sentenced Abubakar to five years imprisonment on each of the two count charges. The sentences will run concurrently.

The court also ordered that the counterfeit currency shall be destroyed.
