Kano Police Ban 2025 Eid-el-Fitr Durbar Over Security Concerns

The Kano State Police Command has announced a ban on all Durbar activities during the 2025 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Kano Police Commissioner Ibrahim Bakori revealed that intelligence reports pointed to potential threats associated with the event, prompting authorities to take preemptive action.

“Following credible intelligence reports of orchestrated plans by miscreants and their sponsors to exploit the Durbar for disruptive activities, the Command, in consultation with the Kano State Government and other key stakeholders, has decided to prohibit all Durbar activities across the state,” Bakori stated.

He emphasized the importance of peace and unity during the festivities, urging residents to prioritize security over tradition.

“As we celebrate, let us remember that peace is paramount. We must put aside our differences and work together as law-abiding citizens for the progress of our state and nation,” he added.

To reassure the public, Bakori confirmed that security measures would be in place to ensure a peaceful Eid celebration, particularly at designated prayer grounds. He advised worshippers to adhere to safety guidelines, remain vigilant, and avoid engaging in potentially hazardous activities such as horse riding, car racing, and reckless driving.

Additionally, the commissioner called on parents and guardians to prevent their children from being influenced by subversive elements, stressing the importance of maintaining public order and avoiding any actions that could lead to disturbances.

The ban comes just a day after Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, also announced the cancellation of the Durbar festivities due to similar security concerns. The deposed emir stated that respected religious leaders and stakeholders had advised him to call off the event.

This decision contrasts with an earlier directive from Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who had instructed all four emirates in the state to commence preparations for the Sallah Durbar.

The Durbar festival, a cherished tradition during both Eid-el-Kabir and Eid-el-Fitr, features elaborate prayers followed by a grand parade led by the emir and his entourage on horseback. Its cancellation marks a significant shift in Kano’s Eid celebrations, underscoring the growing concerns over security in the region.
