Kano Government Drops Charges Against #EndBadGovernance Protesters
In a significant turn of events, the Kano State government has withdrawn all criminal charges against #EndBadGovernance protesters who were arrested during nationwide demonstrations in 2024. The decision comes after months of public outcry and relentless advocacy by human rights groups, marking a victory for justice and freedom of expression.
The protests, which erupted in August 2024, were fueled by widespread economic hardship and soaring inflation. What began as peaceful demonstrations quickly escalated into chaos in some northern states, including Kano, where public and private properties were vandalized and looted. Amid the unrest, some protesters were seen waving Russian flags in cities like Abuja, Kano, and Plateau, further intensifying tensions.
Authorities responded with a heavy hand, arresting over 1,200 demonstrators nationwide and accusing them of conspiracy to commit treason, unlawful assembly, public disturbance, and rioting. Tragically, at least 24 protesters lost their lives during the crackdown, according to Amnesty International.
In Kano, 13 protesters were detained under harsh conditions at the Kurmawa and Goron Dutse Correctional Centres. Their plight caught the attention of Citizens’ Gavel, a civic tech organization dedicated to improving justice delivery. In November 2024, the group petitioned the Kano State Attorney General, urging the discontinuation of the prosecutions and highlighting the inhumane treatment of the detainees.
On Tuesday, Citizens’ Gavel announced a major breakthrough. In a statement, the organization revealed that the Kano State Attorney General, through the Director of Public Prosecution, had officially ordered the withdrawal of all criminal charges against the protesters.
“After over 160 days of unlawful detention and the tireless efforts of our legal team, we are happy to share that the Honourable Attorney General of Kano State has officially ordered the discontinuance and withdrawal of all criminal charges against all #EndBadGovernance protesters detained in Kano State,” the statement read.
The decision has been hailed as a step toward accountability and justice, though it also underscores the ongoing challenges faced by activists and citizens advocating for change in Nigeria. As the country grapples with economic instability and governance issues, the resolution of this case serves as a reminder of the power of collective action and the importance of safeguarding human rights.
