JUSTICE: DPO to face charges for “killing tailor” in Lagos
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) that allegedly fired the shot that killed a 23-year-old fashion apprentice in the Ijeshatedo area of Lagos on Sunday, May 7, is set to face charges.
The DPO and his men had attacked some youths celebrating a birthday party in the area, chasing them into every corner.
The DPO, CSP Mohammed Yakubu, allegedly ran after Jamiu Ayoade and some others into the passage of a house and aimed fire at them. Jamiu was shot in the head.
Jamiu was said to have bled to death while he was being taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.
Lagos police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni said on Tuesday that investigations into the case would be concluded this week.
He said Yakubu would be charged to court after.
Owoseni said of the incident, “I don’t know what he was thinking that could have made him (the DPO) to shoot at somebody in the crowd. He would be arraigned in court; no doubt about that. For any civilian that is killed unjustifiably, my emotion can’t take it. I feel the pain of the family of that boy. Why should I defend anybody that kills?
“There are administrative processes to be followed, which are almost complete. Probably, it will be completed by the end of this week and the DPO will be arraigned in court.”
Owoseni warned other DPOs in the state to caution their men and be ready to face the consequences of misconduct.
