JUST IN: Again, many feared killed as Shi’ites clash with soldiers in Abuja
Just days after three Shi’ite members were killed by operatives of the Nigerian Army in Zuba, Abuja, another clash has reportedly led to the death of more people.
Reports Monday afternoon say soldiers and protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria clashed at the Nyanya area of the Federal Capital Territory.
The soldiers had reportedly prevented the Shi’ite Muslims who were marching to Abuja from Mararaba/Nasarawa axis from passing through the checkpoint.
The standoff reportedly degenerated into violence, prompting the soldiers to open fire on the members. Unconfirmed number of persons have died in the incident.
Members of the group had also been involved in a face-off with soldiers on Saturday, as they defiantly continue to protest the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
El-Zakzaky, who has been in detention since a December 2015 march with his followers in Zaria degenerated into bloodshed, is scheduled to make an appearance before the Kaduna High Court on November 7 for his bail application.
