JUNGLE JUSTICE: Benue residents burn three suspected robbers to death

The act of jungle justice reared its ugly head yesterday (Tuesday) when three suspected armed robbers were burnt to death in Benue state.

The suspects reportedly attacked a filling station in the Adikpo, Kwande area of the state around 10am and ordered attendants to lie face down.

Brave youths in the area however challenged the armed suspects and overpowered them.

A witness told newsmen, “The three men emerged from nowhere and asked people on the premises of the filling station to lie face down. They shot into the air.

“At a point, they asked for the cashier of the filling station. However, a man noticed that they had expended their bullets and challenged their leader. The action destabilised the gang and they took to their heels,” he said.

The youths caught up with the fleeing suspects and mobbed them, before setting them ablaze. Police reportedly arrived shortly after.

“The courage of the young man made other youths and motorcycle riders to chase the robbers. They apprehended them, beat them to a pulp, and set them ablaze,” the witness said.

Some Nigerians cite the lack of trust in police as a reason for the high rate of jungle justice in the country.

Police, however, continue to advise residents to shun taking the law into their hands.
