Joseph Benjamin is a selfie stick! Ali Baba has a library, and other things I learnt at Ignite Africa's destiny walk
Sound Sultan, Tee A, Joke Silva, Shina Peters, Joseph Benjamin, Larry Izamoje, and Ali Baba were there.
Ali Baba has an enviable library
Before Saturday, I had heard a lot of things about Ali Baba chief of which is his blazing the trail in stand-up comedy in the country. Never have I heard of him being an avid reader.
Sincerely, I never ever thought stand-up comedy and reading had any connection. Ali Baba told us about his “enviable” library, encouraged us to read, to help others learn to read whilst still managing to crack our ribs.
He mesmerized us with lines like: a mind has to be inflammable before it can be ignited and so on.
I didn’t get a chance to tell him I’d like to take a tour of his library though. He might get to read this – Sir, may I?
Seyi Law also has a library
Though not as big as Baba’s, he has one all the same. He told us he enjoys reading in the toilet. “It’s the best time to assimilate,” he said.
Joe Benjamin is a selfie stick
Well, that’s what he called himself. And from what I saw, he’s right. He took a lot of selfies with people during the walk. His arms are along, after all.
Sir Shina Peters has not forgotten his moves
If you don’t know who SSP is…well…he’s the AfroJuju king. You still don’t know? Ask your uncle, dad, mum or simply google it.
Donning an orange Ignite Africa branded Tee-Shirt which was the day’s uniform, jog pants, and a pair of trainers; he treated the audience to some of his evergreen classics.
And yes, his age has taken little out of his energy. You need to see him on stage!
People need help
I wasn’t really shocked by this; all thanks to one year of national service in a village in Abia State.
Do you know there are young people living in Lagos who CANNOT read? It’s not that they don’t want to read, they just can’t.
If we have such people in Lagos, how much more the hinterlands.
Not a few Nigerians are kind-hearted
The turn-out at the event was not over the tops but it was quite encouraging to find that that number of people, youths especially, still care to read.
The destiny walk which started last year has been and is being supported by some well-meaning Nigerians. But like the previous paragraph said, there are more people, children especially, who need to be empowered by reading.
Hence more kind-hearted persons are needed to contribute. We were told one could help stock a library with as little N20,000 a month.
