Peseiro Quits Role Three Weeks After Leading Super Eagles To Their Eighth AFCON Finals
José Peseiro, head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has announced his exit from the team following the expiration of his contract, which ended yesterday, Thursday, February 29, 2024.
The departure from the team is coming less than three weeks after the Portuguese manager led Nigeria to their eighth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, where they lost to the host country, Côte d’Ivoire.
“Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfillment,” he said in his farewell message on March 1, 2024.
Peseiro was appointed as head coach of Nigeria’s National team on May 15, 2022, but an attempt to renew his contract was not successful, as the former Porto manager appears to be sought after by other teams after successfully guiding the Eagles to their first AFCON finals in 11 years.
Peseiro also expressed his gratitude to key figures within the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), including President Sir Amaju Pinnick, President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and Secretary Dayo Enebi.
“We would like to express our gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who signed us), President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, all the Staff, and especially all the PLAYERS, with whom leading has been a great pleasure,” Peseiro said.
