Jailbreak in Kogi: 12 Inmates Escape from Federal Correctional Centre
In a daring early morning jailbreak on Monday, twelve inmates escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, sparking a major manhunt by security agencies.
Confirming the incident, Kogi’s Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the development as “unfortunate” and urged residents to remain vigilant.
“We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities,” Fanwo stated. “Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable.”
Authorities have already re-arrested one of the escapees, while efforts are in full swing to track down the remaining fugitives. However, questions are mounting over how the inmates managed to flee.
“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing structural damage raises serious concerns,” Fanwo said. “A thorough investigation is needed to determine the exact circumstances, identify possible saboteurs, and ensure such a breach does not happen again.”
Governor Usman Ododo has ordered the state’s security adviser to collaborate with federal correctional authorities and other agencies to reinforce security measures at the facility.
While reassuring citizens that security operatives are on top of the situation, Fanwo urged calm.
“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” he added.
