Former UBA Chairman Israel Ogbue dies at 99
United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced the passing of its former chairman, Israel Ogbue, who died peacefully at the age of 99.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the financial institution described Ogbue as a distinguished boardroom leader and seasoned administrator whose steady guidance helped shape the bank during a pivotal period in its corporate evolution.
Ogbue joined UBA’s board of directors in 2005 as a non-executive director and was elevated to the position of chairman in 2011. He stepped down in 2013 after overseeing a phase the bank characterised as one defined by strengthened corporate governance, accountability, and a commitment to long-term sustainability.
According to UBA, his tenure coincided with a transformative era for the group, during which he championed principled leadership and reinforced structures that continue to underpin the institution’s operations.
Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha Olona, Delta State, Ogbue began his career in the federal civil service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies. He later joined the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria, where he rose through the ranks to senior management before retiring in 1988.
Over the years, his expertise and reputation for integrity led to appointments on the boards of several prominent organisations, including UBA.
The bank noted that Ogbue often credited his longevity to divine grace and frequently advised younger generations to balance ambition with restraint while remaining resilient in challenging times.
UBA expressed its condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family, adding that details of the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
