INEC Sets Dates for Ekiti, Osun Governorship Elections in 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled the 2026 governorship elections for Ekiti and Osun states, setting the stage for what promises to be a heated political season.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced the dates during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Friday in Abuja. According to Yakubu, Ekiti will head to the polls on Saturday, June 20, 2026, while Osun’s governorship election will follow on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Yakubu explained that the election dates are in strict compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws, which mandate the publication of election notices no later than 360 days before voting day.

“As required by law, INEC has approved the timetable and schedule of activities for both elections,” Yakubu said.

Yakubu noted that the comprehensive schedule has been made available on INEC’s official website and social media channels to guide political parties and inform the public.

In addition to the 2026 governorship elections, Yakubu addressed growing public concern over the long-pending bye-elections and the much-anticipated nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

“We now have 17 pending bye-elections. We understand the urgency, especially with the Anambra governorship election also on the horizon. Preparations are in the final stages, and we will soon make public announcements regarding these activities,” he assured.
