INEC reveals how some of its staff were raped during the election
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has disclosed that some of its staff were grossly assaulted, threatened, abducted and even raped during the concluded election last week.
INEC commissioner for information and voter education, Festus Okoye said in a statement on Friday that despite the relative peace that was experienced in this year’s election, there were still some incidents of violence in some parts of the country.
Electoral officers who were stationed in those areas, Okoye says were badly treated and assaulted by thugs who went as far as raping some officials, while a few others were killed in the line of duty.
“The Commission condoles with the families of its ad-hoc staff who lost their lives while on this national assignment, as well as other Nigerians who died in the course of the elections,” Okoye said.
“It also expresses its deep regrets and sympathy for all victims of this mindless violence. We stand with them in these difficult times.”
Some election observers gave positive reports about the conduct of the election, but others like Situation Room expressed disappointment over how INEC handled the exercise.
