INEC resumes nationwide voter registration as second phase begins

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recommenced the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the country, ushering in the second phase of the registration process.

The latest phase began today, following the conclusion of the first phase, which officially ended on December 10, 2025. INEC had earlier rolled out the exercise with an online pre-registration platform launched on August 18, 2025, before moving to physical registration at designated centres nationwide on August 25.

According to the commission, nearly 10 million Nigerians specifically 9,891,801 initiated the online pre-registration process during the first phase. However, as of November 28, 2025, only 2,572,054 registrations were fully completed nationwide.

INEC explained that completed registrations comprised 1,503,832 online submissions and 1,068,222 registrations carried out at physical centres.

The commission noted that the pause between the two phases was necessary to carry out legal requirements, including the public display of the voters’ register for verification and objections.

“As stipulated by Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, the display of the register of voters for claims and objections took place from December 15 to 21, 2025, at local government offices where the CVR was conducted,” INEC said.

With the resumption of registration, the electoral body encouraged eligible Nigerians to seize the opportunity to register, request transfers of polling units, or update their personal information.

INEC also advised individuals who registered during the first phase to continue verifying their details and to report any errors. The commission further urged citizens to raise objections to the inclusion of ineligible or deceased persons on the voters’ register.

However, voter registration remains temporarily suspended in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to ongoing electoral activities. INEC stated that new dates for the resumption of CVR in both locations will be announced later.
