INEC denies conducting fresh PVC registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has debunked rumours making rounds that it is conducting a new round of PVC registration after it closed the process in August.

A false message indicating that the electoral body has reopened registration for those who missed the opportunity had been circulating.

The fake announcement was being relayed in a message that read: “INEC HAS GIVING ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO REGISTER FOR YOUR PVC, STARTING ON THE 2ND TO 10TH DECEMBER 2018”.

The electoral body announced on its Twitter that the message was untrue.

“The report is untrue and we advise the public to ignore it,” it tweeted.

INEC reported that it has successfully registered 74 million voters across the country and it was impossible to extend the registration further.

The commission had begun registration for the continuous voter registration, CVR in April 27, 2017 to enable unregistered voters an opportunity to participate in the forthcoming election. August 17, 2018 was the initial deadline, but the date was extended to August 31 to accommodate a long line of people who were still waiting to register.

Despite the extension, many people had difficulty registering due to a reported issue of overcrowding and slow network in some registration centres.

Although there were calls for further extension, INEC said it has suspended all registrations to focus on production and distribution of the PVC in preparation for the election in February, 2019.
