INEC begins early operational, legal preparations for 2027 general election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced early operational and legal planning for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The announcement came during the commission’s induction and strategic retreat held in Lagos from Friday, January 9 to Saturday, January 10, 2026.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, described the retreat as a crucial step in transitioning from post-election evaluations to structured forward planning. He emphasized that the engagement would help align the commission’s leadership strategies, operations, and legal compliance ahead of the national polls.

Amupitan also commended INEC staff for the successful conduct of the Anambra off-cycle governorship election in November 2025, noting that the exercise showcased the commission’s institutional capacity shortly after his appointment in October 2025.

Looking ahead, INEC’s election calendar includes the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections scheduled for February 2026, followed by off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. The chairman described these upcoming polls as operational “stress tests,” underscoring the need for fully refined voter registration systems, logistics frameworks, and election technology, including accreditation tools, ahead of the 2027 national elections.

Reiterating INEC’s five guiding principles independence, fairness, credibility, transparency, and inclusion Amupitan warned that any deviation from these standards would not be tolerated.

He further highlighted the increasing number of first-time voters expected in 2027, noting that younger voters demand real-time transparency and technology-driven accountability. “INEC must earn their trust through reliable and inclusive systems,” he said.
