India: 15 children die as school bus collides with truck
No fewer than 15 children were reportedly killed when a school bus collided with a truck in northern India on Thursday.
Many more were said to be injured in the accident. The number of dead victims could rise to 20.
The bus driver was confirmed dead.
Javeed Ahmed, director general of police in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh where the crash occurred, tweeted: “Tragic road accident in Aliganj, Etah. Over 15 school kids feared dead. Rescue of injured ongoing.”
Police say the accident occurred in Aliganj, Etah, but its cause was yet to be ascertained.
Accidents on a winter morning in northern India are a common occurrence, reports say.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families in a tweet.
“Anguished by the tragic accident in UP’s Etah district. I pray for those injured in the accident in Etah recover at the earliest,” he said.
