In a strategic move to bolster internal security and enhance crime-fighting efforts, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has appointed Commissioner of Police (CP) Abayomi Shogunle as the head of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS). In addition to leading the SIS, Shogunle will also oversee Elections Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, as well as the Safe School Protection Squad.
The IGP also announced the appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Chima Ogarashi as the new Force Marine Officer (FMO), tasking him with overseeing maritime security operations along Nigeria’s inland waterways.
According to a statement released on Thursday by police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, these appointments are part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and ensure rapid responses to violent crimes.
“CP Abayomi Shogunle, a seasoned officer with extensive experience in operations and public relations, will lead the SIS in tackling various security challenges. His role will also extend to overseeing elections security and ensuring the safety of schools across the country,” the statement read.
On the maritime front, CSP Ogarashi’s appointment is expected to bring enhanced enforcement of maritime laws and better protection of Nigeria’s waterways. The IGP highlighted the significance of maritime security, emphasizing that the force is preparing to unveil 25 newly acquired gunboats and plans to procure more advanced safety equipment.
