“I want to see a Nigerian telco thriving on the stock exchange” -NCC boss Aminu Maida

Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has expressed his desire to one day see a wholly owned Nigerian telecommunications company thriving on the Nigerian Stock Exchange like Dangote.

The EVC made his declaration while emphasising the crucial role of corporate governance and transparency in promoting investor confidence and driving sustainable growth within Nigeria’s burgeoning telecommunications industry.

Addressing concerns that the regulator’s renewed focus on governance might be perceived as punitive, the EVC firmly dismissed such suggestions. He asserted that these measures are, in fact, indispensable for positioning the sector for long-term expansion and ensuring its robust health.

“It’s simple. We want the industry to grow,” the EVC stated, emphasizing the fundamental objective behind the NCC’s initiatives. He further elaborated, “Corporate governance is a very strong tool for information disclosure and transparency. It may be uncomfortable in the short term, but it is in good faith. My desire is to one day see a wholly-owned Nigerian telecoms company thriving on the stock exchange, just like Dangote.
