Human Trafficking: Teenagers, women lured to Lagos under guise of paid employment

Detectives from the Lagos State police command have busted a human trafficking syndicate that specialises in the trafficking of under-aged girls.

The detectives also rescued seven victims from the hideout of the syndicate.

The victims, who are between the ages of 17 and 35 years, told journalists at the Lagos State Police command, yesterday, that they were promised employment in Lagos by a member of the syndicate whose identity they gave simply as Rita.

Rita, it was gathered, embarked on the journey from Delta to Lagos State with the victims last Saturday. However, on reaching Agofure Park at Mile 2, she left them to go and buy airtime to call another suspected member of the gang.

Explaining how the girls were rescued, the commissioner of police, Imohimi Edgal, said, “Information was received from a member of the public that some girls were seen at Agofure motor park, Mile 2 Lagos at about 6pm last Saturday. They appeared lost and confused, claiming that a woman, called Rita, lured them to Lagos.

The police boss said efforts were still ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate. He advised parents and guardians to be wary of people who came to befriend their daughters with a promise to give them jobs, only to engage them in prostitution and other social vices.
