How a 61-year-old father, Eke Kanu, allegedly raped and abused his teenage daughter in Lagos
Among rising reports of rape and sexual abuse against women in Nigeria, the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 61-year-old man, Eke Kanu for allegedly raping and impregnating his 19-year-old daughter.
According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer DSP Bala Elkana, Kanu was arrested following a complaint made at the Ikorodu Police Station by a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Lagos.
The suspect reportedly started abusing his daughter while she was still a minor. He forcefully abused her repeatedly in their home at Ebute Road, Igbogbo Ikorodu, Lagos. His crime went unnoticed until he impregnated the girl and took her to a chemist shop for abortion.
“On 12/06/2020 at about 1530hrs, Ikorodu Police Station received a complaint from a member of FIDA, that one Eke Kanu ‘m’ 61 years old of Ebute Road, Igbogbo, Ikorodu was having unlawful sexual intercourse with his 19 years old daughter without her consent,” the police report reveals.
“The survivor stated that her father started having sexual intercourse with her when she was small and threatened to deal with her if she tells anybody.
“She further stated that, when her father discovered that she was pregnant, he took her to a chemist where she was administered some drugs and injection to abort the pregnancy.
“The survivor was taken to Mirabel Centre by the police for medical attention and forensic examination.”
DSP Elkana noted that the suspect, Mr. Kanu has been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution.
Kanu’s case follows other incidents of rape and sexual abuse involving minors across the country. In another case that occurred over the weekend, a 26-year-old man, Chinedu Odu was also arrested for raping his boss’ 12-year-old twin daughters who were left under his care at Aguda, Surulere, Lagos.
The case was reported at Aguda Police Station by his female employer and mother of the girls with whom he worked as a salesman.
“The suspect was arrested and he confessed to the commission of the crime. He stated that he started having sexual intercourse with the girls in 2019,” the police said.
The police maintained that the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution.
