House of Reps slash members’ salaries by 50% for six months
In response to the pervasive economic hardship affecting the country, members of the House of Reps have resolved to cut their salaries by 50%. The resolution was passed during Thursday’s plenary session following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance.
The motion, titled “An Appeal to the Proponents of Proposed Nationwide Protest to Maintain Peace, Eschew Violence and Open the Windows for Meaningful Engagements with Government at All Levels in Order to Address their Issues,” was sponsored by Ibrahim Isiaka from Ogun State.

Ben Kalu, the deputy speaker of the House of Reps, proposed the amendment, emphasizing that the salary reduction is a necessary sacrifice for the legislators. “The lawmakers earn N500,000 monthly,” Kalu stated during the session. However, he was corrected by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, who clarified that their monthly salaries are N600,000.
This salary cut decision comes as a significant move by the House to show solidarity with the citizens facing economic challenges and to foster meaningful engagement with the government at all levels.
More updates on this development will follow.
