House of Reps Proposes Aba, Ibadan, Lagoon, and 28 Other New States

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 new states across Nigeria. If approved, this will increase the number of states in the country from 36 to 67.

The proposal was announced during plenary on Thursday, with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu reading a letter from the committee. The committee, chaired by Kalu, outlined the requirements for state creation and called for proposals to be submitted.

“The committee remains committed to supporting the implementing efforts that align with constitutional provisions and would only consider proposals that comply with the stipulated guidelines,” the letter stated.

The new states are spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The North Central zone will have Okun, Okura, Confluence (from Kogi), Benue Ala, Apa (from Benue), and a new FCT State. The North East will have Amana (from Adamawa), Katagum (from Bauchi), Savannah (from Borno), and Muri (from Taraba).

In the North West, the proposal includes New Kaduna and Gurara (from Kaduna), Tiga and Ari (from Kano), and Kainji (from Kebbi).

The South East will have Etiti, Adada (from Enugu), Orlu (From Imo), Aba (from Abia), and Orashi from the Southeast region.

The proposal requires approval from the National Assembly, state houses of assembly, and local government councils before it can take effect.
